Writey is an app for handwriting education.
Started by Ryan Firouzbakht in 2020 when the pandemic hit, the core idea was to bring handwriting worksheets to the digital world. After the launch, it got a good traction and people liked the concept.
I didn’t know Ryan back then. Later in 2022 we met in a gathering in Istanbul and talked about it. Some months later he offered me to join as a founding partner and I happily accepted. After a year of collaboration we founded Writey B.V. as a company in the Netherlands.
Smart Worksheets
Smart Worksheets are the heart of Writey. Guided tracing with looping animations, stroke-by-stroke letter practice, then words and longer text. You can bring your own words and texts too — so practice matches what someone actually wants to write, not only a fixed course list.
There is also freestyle practice paper when you just want a clean lined page and no rules.
Journeys
Journeys turned practice into a path kids (and adults) actually want to finish. Alphabet and cursive tracks, small lessons, streaks, coins, stickers — progress that feels visible instead of another pile of worksheets.
We built it for the school year, and it changed how people stick with the app. A few minutes a day, clear next steps, and handwriting stops feeling like a chore.
Schools and bulk licenses
Teachers and school managers can buy bulk licenses at a better price, and we added Clever login so classrooms don’t need yet another account stack. Handwriting is niche, but schools keep showing up — so we keep making Writey work for them.
Exams
The latest addition is Exams. It’s free with courses that have word worksheets.
Seven minutes, real words, accuracy scoring, and an evaluation card when you’re done. You need at least 50% to pass, and you can retake once every 24 hours. Practice alone doesn’t tell you how good you are under a little pressure — Exams do.
Five years and iterating
After plus five years, we still develop and build new stuff in Writey. One million+ people have used it to learn print, cursive, and calligraphy across languages. Organic growth, zero funding, lots of iteration — and we’re still shipping.
Writey is on the App Store and at writey.app.
